Applied Chemist

Celtic Renewables is widely regarded as one of the most innovative Biotech companies in Europe,  who have developed a patented low-carbon technology that converts biological residues into high value low carbon sustainable bio-chemicals using an inspirational reinvention of a century old process known as the Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE) fermentation, to bring this age old fermentation back to the global scale.  The sustainable biochemicals produced by this innovative process can be utilised across a broad spectrum of much needed green products from biofuel, to cosmetics, food flavourings, hygiene and pharmaceuticals.  This pioneering company has completed the first stage of construction of their first state of the art processing plant in Grangemouth, a historical exemplar plant for Scotland, and are preparing to move to live plant commissioning early next year.

The company is committed to working with people who believe in sustainability and innovation and we are partnering with Nine Twenty Engineering & Manufacturing to recruit a number of key roles for the exciting move into the operational phase with a number of roles to be filled this year and early in 2021.  Nine Twenty has a passion for start-up organisations, innovative technology and environmental sustainability and so they are both proud and delighted to be supporting such an exciting Scottish based business at such pivotal phase.

They are now looking to appoint an Applied Chemist to be part of the Engineering & Projects Team, continually working on the optimisation of our industrial ABE process, which will in turn help deliver the Company Vision “To be the World Leader in ABE Fermentation as a Global Sustainable Industry”. You will be a key member of the Technical Transfer Team who will safely and efficiently transfer knowledge from the laboratory, though plant development and commissioning to CRL group manufacturing facilities, and vice versa. On a day to day basis you will monitor and advise on process efficiency, and will work continually on process improvement/optimisation.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Leading by example, you will support a culture within the Technical Transfer Team where safe and hygienic working practices, and the requirements of the Integrated Management System, are strictly followed, underpinned by the foundations of GMP and GLP, to ensure compliance with H&S, Environmental and other legal requirements. Through the processes that you will help develop, you will help ensure compliance to the CRL governance structure, and that Compliance, Quality and Cost are at the core of every decision.
  • You will be a key member of the Technical Transfer Team, moving knowledge from the laboratory to the current plant and design and development of future plants, and vice versa. The Technical Transfer Team will be integral to the commissioning of future global plants.
  • Your expert knowledge of the applied ABE process will then help ensure the delivery of the overall relevant tactical plans with the aim of continually improving operational Compliance requirements, optimising Quality, Yield, Volume and Cost.
  • You will work closely with the Commercial and Innovation teams to develop our products and potential future products.
  • As the applied chemist you will develop an expert knowledge of the science behind our process, focussing on the practical application of the science.
  • You will develop an expert knowledge of the ABE process from raw materials in, through to distillation and all associated processes relating to co-products and by-product streams (including an in depth awareness of Operational application, opportunities and constraints). Your main areas of expertise will be around fermentation and distillation.
  • You will develop and understand the chemical/biochemical processes integral to our process to enable troubleshooting, process optimisation and future development.
  • As routine, you will provide progress updates against assigned activity, and recommendations to CRL leadership, identifying opportunities, risks and any remedial action plans required.

This is a brilliant role for someone who is passionate about problem solving and becoming a technical expert within the business. The client is looking for the following skills/experience:

  • Chemistry Degree (or equivalent) and/or ideally extensive experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Have practical experience, or an ability to demonstrate awareness of the importance of, a hygienic/sterile/food grade manufacturing process
  • Be capable of working towards gaining an expert knowledge of the applied ABE process and all associated processes/plant/equipment
  • Have strong laboratory analytical skills
  • As an integral part of your role, you will form strong working relationships with the various other members of the Technical Transfer Team, staying informed from R&D concept through to the realisation of plant trials. You will be one of the main liaisons between Manufacturing, Engineering, Innovation and Commercial teams with regards to R&D initiatives.
  • Assumes the role of project leader during assigned plant integration trials with accountability for reporting, data collation and future recommendations.
  • Due to the nature and position of the Business you will be capable of independently managing your own time and tasks, bearing in mind that this is an organisation which is developing at pace
  • Additional skills that are advantageous: Direct experience of the Chemical industry; Integrated management systems experience
