Role Purpose

To manufacture Couplers to a standard consistent with the agreed level of technical specification in a safe, efficient, timely and effective manner. The provision of support and guidance to Cell Team Members in support of reliable process operations. To operate, perform changeovers and fault find on CNC machines. To perform all work, in line with defined procedures, quality, environmental and health and safety standards.

Structure

Responsible to the Coupler Shop Manager but will normally report to and be supervised by the Coupler Shop Chargehand. Will have supervisory responsibilities for other Cell Team Members and overall responsibility in support of reliable process operations within the Coupler Shop in the absence of the Coupler Shop Chargehand. Will have regular contact and communications with other members of the production, technical, methods and maintenance teams and occasionally with other levels of management, and external customers.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with defined Quality Procedures, Standards and Directives
  • Ensure compliance with the Company’s Environmental Control Policies and Procedures and Statutory Regulations at all times
  • Ensure compliance of the Company’s Health & Safety Policies and Procedures, Safe Working Practices and Statutory Regulations at all times
  • Operate the Cell with the minimum of supervision ensuring compliance with product technical and quality specifications
  • Ensure the Coupler Manufacturing Department operates in a smooth and efficient manner in the absence of a Production Supervisor and to inform a Supervisor / Department Manager of any major problems out with normal working hours
  • Ensure Cell Team Members work in accordance with all relevant procedures ensuring targets on quality, production, TRS and safety are met
  • Perform changeovers and operate machinery to the appropriate set programme, ensuring maximum efficiency within the Cell and compliance with product technical and quality specifications
  • Carry out inspections to ensure product specification compliance, visual inspection of Couplers, gauge Couplers, identify non-conforming material and make adjustments as required to machinery ensuring tolerance specification compliance
  • Monitor, compile and input technical information and complete any relevant paperwork/reports as required
  • Assist and liaise as required, other members of the production, methods, technical and maintenance teams, in minimising downtime of plant, whilst ensuring process compliance
  • Ensure Cell area and the department are kept clean and tidy
  • Assist and liaise as required, with Supervisors and / or other departments
  • Follow all relevant works instructions at all times
  • Participate as required in continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide advice, assistance and training to Cell Team Members as required
  • Identify where corrective action is required, and take appropriate action where necessary

Assignment of Duties

  • Operational duties and tasks will be assigned, monitored and reviewed by the Coupler Shop Chargehand

Knowledge/ Skills/ Competencies 

  • Preferably possess a recognised appropriate craft qualification in an engineering related discipline, reached through apprenticeship and achievement of appropriate City & Guilds Certification, or, possess the necessary experience of operating CNC Machines with a knowledge of setting, changeovers and CNC programming
  • Must possess excellent communication, organisational, interpersonal skills, and the ability to supervise others
  • The job holder must be self-motivated, enthusiastic and capable of working well both alone and as part of a team
  • Possess the ability to prioritise and co-ordinate multiple tasks to meet targets
  • The role requires knowledge, understanding and application of Company Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and Safe Working Practices, Company Environmental Policies and Procedures and the Company’s Quality Policy and Standards and Quality Management System
  • Must work co-operatively, within the production team, across the whole organisation, and with external customers, focusing on continuous improvement goals
  • Be able to operate, ensuring the proper use and care of, company plant and equipment, machinery, personal equipment, test equipment and tool kit
  • Must demonstrate a flexible and innovative approach to problem solving
  • Must possess a knowledge and experience of technical drawings, specifications and documentation.
